SEA TURTLE NEWS
For
more than 12 years, volunteers with the Topsail Turtle Project have monitored
the 26 miles of Topsail Island’s beach for the unique tracks made
by nesting sea turtles as they come ashore to lay their eggs. The nests
are marked and roped off to protect them. When hatching is eminent, volunteers
sit with the nest to assure the safety of the hatchlings as they make
their way to the sea. The project welcomes the participation of visitors.
Each Thursday from Memorial Day through Labor Day, everyone has an opportunity to learn more about these fascinating animals. Topsail Turtle Project presents an informative program at 4 PM at the Surf City Town Hall. All ages find these programs interesting, so be sure to plan to attend.
